CoQ10 or Coenzyme Q10 is an enzymes and antioxidant that is naturally found in the body.  It is biosynthesized in the body and shares a common synthetic pathway with cholesterol. The level of CoQ10 in human organs peaks around the age of 20 years and then declines fairly rapidly.  The heart muscle has the highest concentration of CoQ10, followed by the liver, kidney, spleen and pancreas.

CoQ10 level tends to decrease with age and to be low in patients with chronic disease such as heart conditions, hypertension and diabetes. Hence the need for CoQ10 supplements.
